 Check the souund of these words in the dictionary.

to read  /rɪːd/   read    /red/
to live    /lɪv/    live    /lɑɪv/
The sound may also change according to the where the stress is on the word:
to record  /rɪˈkɔːd/  record    /ˈrekɔːd/
to present  /prɪˈzent/  present  /ˈpreznt/
